We at Vintage Concert Audio are delighted to receive a donation from Luxembourg.
Jerome Thielen and Andy Lauer have decided to donate their Midas PR040, ex. Dire Straits FOH Console, which has not been used for over 10 years, to Vintage Concert Audio e.V.. We would like to thank them very much for this.
The Midas Console is no stranger to our Vice President Jürgen Desch. He had bought the ex Concert Sound (London) mixing console in 1994 / 95 with 2 other Midas mixing consoles and a complete Martin Audio modular PA and monitor system from Nigeria.
As it turned out, this complete ex Dire Straits / Concert Sound PA system had been sold there to provide sound for concerts, as no rental company dared to rent equipment to Nigeria at the time. So the system was bought, used and sold again in 1995 as it was no longer in use.
Once the equipment had arrived in Germany, it was quickly realized that the electronics and mixing consoles were in need of major repairs. Jürgen Desch restored the entire system, including the 3 Midas mixing consoles, and used it to provide sound for the Reggae Sunsplash Tour in 1996. 2 of the Midas mixing consoles were then sold. The ex Dire Straits monitor desk remained in Jürgen’s possession.
A week ago, on Sunday 10th January 2021, I received an email in the morning from vintage friend Oliver Thiel with a note and a link that an old Dire Straits Midas was for sale. I immediately got in touch with the owner and told him about our VCA club. He immediately liked the idea of his mixing console finding a permanent place in our museum.
So I rang Jürgen Desch and told him I had found the old Midas, which he had already restored and sold on. He doubted it at first, but then realised on site in Luxembourg that he had already completely renovated the console years ago. It’s also great that the FOH desk has now found its way back to its old colleague and monitor desk. I really don’t believe in coincidences, but that must have been one. What a coincidence. Thanks to our friends and generous donors from Luxembourg.
